DESCRIPTION:Diving isn’t just about looking around and enjoying the scenery. It’s also about being able to describe and share your experience to others or to enhance your memory by keeping more detailed records in your dive log. California marine life identification can be divided into two sections: fish life & invertebrate life. This class will focus on fish identification. This seminar will help you recognize and identify some of the common species of fish found off the California coast, from the common Garibaldi to the elusive crevice kelpfish. You will also gain the tools and know-how to help you identify other species that are not covered in class. You will learn the anatomy and morphology characteristics of fish to help you describe various fish when talking with others or searching inside of an identification book. This is one of the two-part marine life identification series that we offer, and is also a part of the Underwater Naturalist certification course. It can be taken on its own or as part of the certification.

DESCRIPTION:April 8 ~ 17, 2027 Incredible… is probably the most accurate word to describe the Revillagigedo Archipelago, more commonly known as Socorro. This region is home to volcanic pinnacles with gnarly currents that bring big fish action - mantas, tunas, whale sharks, and numerous mammal encounters like dolphins and whales. Without question, the best manta encounters in the world are found here, where divers have close intimate connections with these gentle giants. Socorro has one of the largest underwater biomass compared to the rest of the world, and is the largest marine protected area in North America. Located 290 miles from the tip of Baja California, Socorro is considered the lesser-known brother islands to the Galapagos, but not as often visited. Truly, these islands are the wild wild Pacific. We will be visiting during the best season, with 100ft+ visibility, no hurricane threat, and comfortable subtropical temperature range. Ocean Safari will make the voyage to explore Socorro Islands with one of the most experienced local operators in Mexico. DESCRIPTION:August 6 - 17, 2027 (12 days) Everyone has heard of diving in the Galapagos Islands, but do you know of the lesser-known islands far more adventurous with much more sharks and big marine life actions? Malpelo National Park, located 300 nautical miles off the coast of Columbia, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest no-fishing sanctuary in the tropical Eastern Pacific. The waters surrounding Malpelo is home to over 380 species of fish, 730 species of marine invertebrates including 15 coral species, 18 marine mammals, and several marine reptiles. Since the island is the only piece of land for hundreds of miles, over 50 species of migratory birds depend on this safe haven. Surrounded by deep waters and multiple oceanic currents, Malpelo is a perfect location to see the convergence of big pelagic marine life including hammerhead, silky, smalltooth sand tiger, and Galapagos sharks, whale sharks, eagle rays, and huge schooling fish. Since the island is very small, there is very little protection from rough seas. You will experience the pure thrill of diving in one of the most action-packed dive destinations of the world! However, such exhilarating diving in a remote location come with demanding conditions, especially with strong current that can appear or change in an instant. Gorgona Island is located about 28km (17mi) off the Columbian Pacific coast, about 160km southwest of Buenaventura. The island is 9km (5.6mi) long and 2.5km (1.6mi) across at the widest point, with the total area of 26 sq km (10 sq mi). It was established as Gorgona National Park in 1984 to preserve the rich biodiversity of the tropical forest and the offshore coral reefs. The park covers a total maritime area of 620 sq km (240 sq mi). Hammerhead shark, white-tip reef shark, sea turtle, whale shark and moray eel can be found in the waters around Gorgonia Island. The area is also well known for the yearly passage of the humpback whale and their newborn during the southward migration from August to October. Despite any challenging situations, fear not! Our expedition will be aboard the safest boat that has ever operated in Malpelo, the Vivax (Latin for long lived, enduring). The captain, Tony Cruz, has over 20 years of seamanship experience, and is one of the few mariners ever to circumnavigate the world in a single voyage. The crew is also solid, made up of locals and ex-marines - the cook will serve you delicious meals but can also stitch up an open cut! The vessel is a former Swedish navy boat is equipped with all new machinery and electronics, plus safety features that meet or exceed the international SOLAS standards. There are three inflatable skiffs, one for each dive group and an extra that’s ready for rescue. A personal locator beacon and surface marker buoy, which are critical for diving in a remote location such as this, will be provided for you free of charge for every dive. DESCRIPTION:October 25~November 9, 2027 The Forgotten Islands are called that for a reason -- much of the 1000+ km stretch of the archipelago remains unexplored, untouched, and pristine. Furthermore, this specially customized itinerary focuses on the even less explored area of the Banda Sea, from the heart of the Forgotten Islands through the Kai Islands to Triton Bay (West Papua). During our 500+ mile journey, we will do some exploratory diving in the Kai Islands and be among the very first divers to lay their eyes on their pristine coral reef wonders. There will be amazing deep walls covered with soft corals, sea fans, and sponges. You will be surrounded by schools of jacks, fusiliers, redtooth triggerfish, and surgeonfish. You may have dove in the other parts of the famed Coral Triangle, but this area of the Triangle is truly the world’s last frontier. There is no other place with such endless stretches of amazingly preserved coral reefs in the world. You will also have the privilege of visiting remote villages and witness their unique cultures. You will observe the intimate relationship that some village fishermen have with the whale sharks in the area, and have the chance to snorkel with these majestic animals.
