August Recap

The highlight of August was the trip to Farnsworth Bank aboard the SoCal Diver on August 10.
We did two dives at Farnsworth. First was at a deeper spot and the second at the high spot. Farnsworth Bank is one of the few places in Southern California where you can see healthy colonies of purple hydrocoral. Descending down to the underwater seamount and seeing the purple hydrocoral coming into view never gets old. There were also many massive garibaldi nests full of eggs in various stages of development. The male garibaldis was diligently guarding their nests, but they let me take a few quick snaps.

Have you met a non-diver who is surprised there can be a dive shop located inland, like Ocean Safari? While you may be inclined to answer something about distance not being a deterrent, you could also tell them that the factors influencing the ocean actually starts in the mountains, leads down the rivers, with miles of crucial wetlands before reaching the ocean. Come join our Marine Ecology field trips this summer to learn more about the connections between our local inland ecosystem to the ocean. We’ll identify key plants, birds, and marine life that live in the intersection of the ocean and land. We’ll discover the environmental dynamics that can make living in these areas challenging for the organisms. The more we understand how all living things are connected, the better we can aspire for a sustainable future!

May Dive Trip Recap

In May, we went exploring in the areas of Catalina we have not been diving in a while. Little Farnsworth, Long Point, and the area next to Seal Point were among the memorable dive sites from these trips. We saw quire a few garibaldi dads tending to their nests. Some of them had tiny little eggs. Be careful when you try to get a closer look. They will definitely show their displeasure by charging at you!
