Underwater Naturalist Certification Course
You love diving, but when your non-diving friends and family ask you what you saw on your dive, perhaps you want to respond with more details than “lots of fish... and other marine animals.” Or if you already know some of the underwater inhabitants, would you like to know how each species play a special role in kelp forest ecology, and how seasonal changes, oceanographic factors, and human impact can affect the kelp forest ecosystem?
As divers, we are presented with the awe and wonder of the underwater scene. Wouldn’t you like to keep the ecosystem pristine, so your kids and grandkids can also enjoy diving as much as you do? Become a part of the conservation team. You can become a citizen scientist and learn how to contribute to the scientific knowledge of our kelp forest ecosystem, and help preserve it for future generations.
In this course, you will learn to identify common fish and marine invertebrates of California’s kelp forests, learn about marine ecology and marine biology, and become citizen scientists to contribute to the conservation efforts of our oceans.

Aquatic Skills for Diving Competency Pool Workshop
This program provides an environment where you will learn, practice, and improve the four main swim strokes: front crawl (freestyle), breaststroke, elementary back stroke, and side stroke. Addition skills include treading water, and basic lifesaving skills. Basic lifesaving skills consist of towing, assisting, buddy rescue, self rescue, and survival float.
At Ocean Safari, we firmly believe that there is more to perfection than mere practice. Practice without proper refinement does not benefit you very much. Therefore, through constructive criticism, our experienced staff will help refine your skills, which eventually will lead towards perfection. Furthermore, much like yoga, committed consistency is the best way to achieve results while simultaneously developing, refining, and maintaining key skills.
For whichever aqua skill level you possess, you will work with trained professionals who will push your endurance to swim faster, with more accuracy, and to improve physical fitness.

Photography Pool Workshop
Practice in the Pool Before You Take it to the Ocean
Test out your camera, strobes, and accessories in a pool before heading to the open ocean. This is an intermediary photography course for divers who are learning to use the settings and features on their underwater cameras, have recently purchased a new camera system, or are working on a new underwater photography technique. More challenging than the classroom, less daunting than trying something new in the open ocean, this course is designed for you to experiment in a controlled environment and to receive immediate assistance and feedback. Various props will be employed to simulate the macro and wide angle photography opportunities you might encounter under the sea. This is a fun and helpful class that just might make the difference between capturing the photo of a lifetime and having to tell the story of the one that got away.

Fish Identification Seminar
Diving isn’t just about looking around and enjoying the scenery. It’s also about being able to describe and share your experience to others or to enhance your memory by keeping more detailed records your dive log. California marine life identification can be divided into two sections: fish life & invertebrate life. This class will focus on fish identification.
This seminar will help you recognize and identify some of the common species of fish found off the California coast, from the common Garibaldi to the elusive crevice kelpfish. You will also gain the tools and know-how to help you identify other species that are not covered in class. You will learn the anatomy and morphology characteristics of fish to help you describe various fish when talking with others or searching inside of an identification book.
This is one of the two-part marine life identification series that we offer, and is also a part of the Underwater Naturalist certification course. It can be taken on its own or as part of the certification.

We are offering this course to help you to better understand your camera’s settings, it’s various menus, and how to best adjust and optimize those settings to vastly improve your results. We will also share other tried and true underwater photography tips that can be used to maximize the results of all camera systems. So, if you are interested in stepping it up a bit, this is the class for you.

Introduction to Underwater Photography Seminar
Taking pictures underwater is somewhat similar to taking pictures on land; however, underwater photography has its distinct differences. For example, when taking photos underwater, you always need to consider the three aspects of light: reflection, refraction, and absorption. Therefore, knowing how to use different lighting will enhance the quality of your pictures.
This seminar will examine the important functions of your camera, the most appropriate settings to use for the pictures you plan on taking, and basic underwater photography concepts. Additionally, it will discuss the use of proper casings to prevent your camera from flooding during your dive. Feel free to bring your camera to class for extra practice!

Marine Conservation and Human Impacts
What is your attitude about environmental issues? As a diver who frequently visits the ocean, you may have noticed first-hand some changes to the marine environment. Maybe you're motivated to help. Or perhaps it just seems too disouraging. This webinar is not just about the negative human impacts or what humans can do to help. It's more about challenging our environmental philosophy so that our day-to-day actions incorporate how much we value the marine environment.

Practical Sign Language for Underwater Communication
Have you ever tried to communicate something specific to your dive buddy during a dive? Most often their response would be a confused look with a slightly tilted head.
The hand signals we use during our dives are basic and very limited. With some knowledge of practical sign language and finger spelling, we can help break the barrier of miscommunication without carrying a clunky slate.
Join us for this unique workshop to learn this new skill to express yourself underwater on your next dive.

Intro to Marine Life Field Seminar
The Channel Islands are at the confluence of the cold California Current from the north and the warm Southern California Countercurrent from the south. The mixing of these two major current systems, along with upwelling that brings up nutrients, result in the exceptionally high species diversity and ecological richness of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. There is no better way to learn about marine creatures than while diving and exploring in this remarkably biodiverse area, sometimes dubbed “The Galapagos of North America.”

Aqua SEAL Program
This program for teens aims to provide hands-on education in the sciences, while also teaching practical skills to safely explore aquatic environments. The scientific themes will range from biology, ecology, oceanography, conservation, and environmental science. Students will also build aquatic lifestyle skills to always know how to safely engage in bodies of water. The educational themes and practical skills will be taught in the classroom, swimming pool, and various ocean environments. The program consists of one orientation, two aquatic sessions, one classroom seminar, two field trips, one intro to scuba pool, and one island boat trip. Each session, the students will learn lifelong skills to explore and enjoy aquatic environments in a safe and exciting way.
Our goal is to show the young generation how to have fun outside safely, teach them about science & nature, and help them become respectful stewards of Mother Earth. We are all aware that electronics are being introduced to youth’s lives from an early age, replacing the practical outdoor learning experiences that older adults had when they were young. This lack of outdoor exposure has been dubbed “nature deficit disorder” (a term coined by author Richard Louv) and has been linked to issues such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, and obesity. Research has shown that spending time outdoors provides benefits such as improving mood and self-esteem, stimulating creativity and imagination, improving attention, memory, and reasoning skills (which can lead to better grades!), and developing social skills and emotional awareness. We believe that physical interaction and connection with nature, rather than through a phone or TV screen, is essential for the successful development of society’s future leaders.
